Overview:
What does ethics mean in design? Overview is a hybrid print-digital experience that aims to explore this question through engaging stories and interactions.
This was completed with a group of 5 other designers. Each member of the group was responsible for bringing two concepts to the table. Each concept would be translated in to a two-page spread in the zine, and a corresponding mobile interaction.
My Roles:
UX/UI design, Concept, User research, Print Design, Branding
Background
With this project, there is an opportunity to address ethical shortcomings in the design and technology industries by creating an experience that introduces users to these serious issues in a digestible way.

Question: What does design ethics mean? We created a mind map to find out. The one idea we kept coming back to was user data collection.
Research
After doing research on the topic, we found some intriguing insights into the way people think about their data.
- 81% of people say they are concerned with how their data is used online
- 81% of people say they are concerned with how their data is used online
- 75% say they've become less likely to trust companies with their data
- 62% believe it's not possible to go through daily life without having data collected
So, we know lots of people are concerned with user data and how it’s used. But, who is the most important demographic to target for our experience?
Opportunity: target generation z with an educational experience
- 82% of Gen Z students say they have data privacy concerns
- 97% of Gen Z students say they actively use social media
Goal: Help a new generation of social media users understand the life cycle of their data.
To start planning content for our experience, we mapped user data into multiple sub-topics. Each team member would design content for two of which.
My Topics:
- Who has access to your data
- How to be safe with you data on social media
Digital Stranger Danger
Our theme, digital stranger danger, blends today's dystopian technology with a look of 90s nostalgia in attempt to create a visual connection with our audience.
Light & Dark
Embracing our thematic mix, we created 2 visual languages to switch between, depending on whether the content in focus would be more informational, or heavy-handed.
Print Design Process
As opposed to designing our print content in InDesign, all print assets were built and laid out directly in Figma to encourage collaboration across the booklet.
After finalizing the designs, we exported PDF's from Figma into InDesign, where we were able to easily finalize the page layout and send the design off to print.
Since being published, Overview is now available for purchase on Blurb’s website!

Digital Experience
Holding the physical booklet we created from scratch was one of the most rewarding parts of this process. The first print came out relatively perfectly, and the team breathed a collective sigh of relief.
The digital experience utilizes a QR code on the cover of the booklet to connect users with a Snapchat story-like interaction, with each ‘story’ correlating to one of the print spreads. The story interaction is one we felt strongly about using, as it's a familiar interaction pattern for our social media-savvy audience.
